FILMS WITH POLITICAL HIDDEN AGENDA

--NEWS FROM IMDB.COM

Eighties' pop star Boy George has laughed off allegations he kidnapped a male escort and chained him to the walls of his east London, England flat on Saturday. Auden Carlsen claims he was hired by Boy George - real name George O'Dowd - to go to the singer's flat at the early hours of Saturday morning to pose for photos. The ex-Culture Club star started taking pictures of the male escort in kinky gear - but Carlsen claims O'Dowd and another man jumped on him and handcuffed him to a hook by the bed. He managed to free himself by pulling the hooks from the wall and alerted the police from a nearby newsagent. However, the pop star's brother Kevin claims George has laughed off the allegations. He says, "The bloke (Carlsen) has done a fair bit of modeling for our clothes shop, so how can what he said be true? George isn't at all annoyed at the allegations, in fact, he thinks it's hilarious. Yeah, he was arrested, but the police are always going to follow it up when someone makes a complaint like that." The singer has been bailed while detectives probe the allegations. George received community service last year in New York when police found cocaine in his apartment.

I also think the comparison between James Lee and Bresson is very interesting. I have seen only one film by James Lee. It’s called THE BEAUTIFUL WASHING MACHINE. After I saw it, it reminded me of Tsai Ming-Liang, because of its stillness. But when I read here that James Lee was compared to Bresson, this reminded me of the film’s minimal dialogue, minimal acting, minimal set decoration, minimal movement, and the theme of human alienation. No matter how close or far he is to Bresson, I can confirm that he and his group of Malaysian directors are really the ones to watch.

My friend wrote a comment on THE BEAUTIFUL WASHING MACHINE here:

I’m not an expert on Tsai and Bresson, but I think one of the main differences between them is that Tsai is more romantic, while Bresson might be more pessimistic. And I think that while the style or film techniques used in THE BEAUTIFUL WASHING MACHINE might remind me of Tsai, it still is not a romantic film, but it represents some cruel human natures. I think some characters in Tsai’s movies long for human touch, while Bresson’s films and THE BEAUTIFUL WASHING MACHINE make me afraid of human.

Thank you very much, Girish, for mentioning Pilgrim Akimbo’s blog. The photos there are amazing. My Thai friend loves AU HASARD BALTHAZAR very much. I’m sure he will scream with delight when I tell him about this blog.

I saw very few films directed by Welles: THE HEARTS OF AGE (1934), THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI, TOUCH OF EVIL, CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, and F FOR FAKES. THE HEARTS OF AGE was shown in Bangkok in a film festival organized by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and his friends. I don’t understand anything in CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, because my English listening comprehension is very bad. It’s great that Noel Vera wrote something about this film so I can gain more understanding into it. I am very impressed with F FOR FAKES. It is very complex and playful. I think I have to see it again.

A Thai critic seems to love IT’S ALL TRUE (1993, Bill Krohn, Myron Meisel, Richard Wilson). He often mentions this film and wrote a long review of it. But I haven’t seen this film yet.

I also like Orson Welles in SOMEONE TO LOVE (1987, Henry Jaglom). I like Jaglom, too, and I wish more DVDs of Henry Jaglom were available here in Bangkok.

This is the first time I comment here. I’m glad you like TAXIDERMIA. I also like it a lot. Personally, I also think that the phrase “there's still something poetic in his disgusting images” that you use to describe TAXIDERMIA can also be used to describe “4” (2005, Ilya Khrzhanovsky) and A BATTLE IN HEAVEN (Carlos Reygadas). These three films should be shown together.

I also wrote something about TAXIDERMIA in my blog here:
http://celinejulie.wordpress.com/2007/04/09/hungry-for-hungarian-films/

As for Shane Meadows, I only saw A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS. I like A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS very much, because it gave me a great surprise. At first I assumed that the film would be about the warm relationship between an adult and a child, but, fortunately, the film turned the other way. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS gave me no surprises like that.

Films about the making of skinheads seem to be very interesting. As for films about British skinheads, I haven’t seen MADE IN BRITAIN, but I like MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE, but it doesn’t explore the skinhead problem deeply.

I wish I could see THIS IS ENGLAND, ROMPER STOMPER (1992, Geoffrey Wright), which is about Australian skinheads, and FUEHRER EX (2002, Winfried Bonengel), which is a true story about German Neo-Nazis. I guess these films can make people understand the problems better. However, I don’t know if Russia, which has the most alarming skinhead problems, has any films dealing with this issue yet.

2.PRIMEVAL (2007, MICHAEL KATLEMAN, A-)

3.MISS POTTER (2006, CHRIS NOONAN, A+/A)

4.MACGYVER (1985-1992, A+)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contras

The Contras initially received financial and military support from the Argentine government and the US through the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The Contras would later receive aid through clandestine initiatives by figures in the administration of President Ronald Reagan. They received some support from Nicaraguans opposed to the Sandinistas' nationalization of their land, formation of large farming cooperatives, and mistreatment of dissenters.

A Sandinista militiaman interviewed by The Guardian claimed that Contra rebels committed these atrocities against Sandinista prisoners after a battle at a Sandinista rural oupost:

Rosa had her breasts cut off. Then they cut into her chest and took out her heart. The men had their arms broken, their testicles cut off and their eyes poked out. They were killed by slitting their throats and pulling the tongue out through the slit.[2]

A similar report by the contra newsletter "Resistencia" recounted that a small boy witnessed his mother being raped and tortured and had her breasts cut off. The boy then had since joined the Contras to fight the Sandinistas.

Human Rights groups such as Americas Watch, Amnesty International, and Witness for Peace routinely catalogued yearly allegations of such war crimes as:

targeting health care clinics and health care workers for assassination.
kidnapping civilians.
torturing civilians.
executing civilians, including children, who were captured in combat.
raping women.
indiscriminantly attacking civilians and civilian houses.
seizing civilian property.
setting alight civilian houses in captured towns.

The Catholic Institute for International Relations summarized contra operating procedures in their 1987 human rights report: "The record of the contras in the field, as opposed to their official professions of democratic faith, is one of consistent and bloody abuse of human rights, of murder, torture, mutilation, rape, arson, destruction and kidnapping."

BUBBLE BOY (2001, BLAIR HAYES, A)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258470/

>.a kid whose religious-zealot mom (Swoosie Kurtz: Liar Liar) had just kept him in the house his whole life, a necessary defense tactic because, as we all know, the world is full of whores waiting to corrupt her innocent baby the moment he steps outside.<<

http://www.villagevoice.com/film/0135,rutigliano,27627,20.html

>>God-fearing Reaganite Mrs. Livingston (Swoosie Kurtz as Piper Laurie in Carrie) does have some valid concerns about who her cured-at-four bubble tot Jimmy (Jake Gyllenhaal as Jason Biggs as Adam Sandler) might encounter should he be loosed from his Mommy-controlled biosphere. "Whore next door" Chloe (Marley Shelton) has pert breasts, blond hair, and a lone brain cell<<

6.หนังแนว COMING OF AGE เรื่อง THE EMPEROR’S CLUB (2002, MICHAEL HOFFMAN, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0283530/
