RUNNING SCARED (2006, WAYNE KRAMER, A+/A)

VALESKA GRISEBACH ผู้กำกับ LONGING โด่งดังมาจากหนังเรื่อง BE MY STAR (2001) ซึ่งเป็นภาพยนตร์ที่เธอสร้างขึ้นเพื่อใช้ในการจบการศึกษาจาก VIENNA FILM ACADEMY IN AUSTRIA
http://www.german-films.de/en/germanfilmsquaterly/previousissues/seriesgermandirectors/valeskagrisebach/index.html

5.NO REGRETS (2000, BENJAMIN QUABECK)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=764

>> Daniel is 19-years-old and finally has his high school days behind him. After a wonderful summer vacation, he is back in town and ready for life to start happening. Things start out alright, but all his shots seem to backfire. His father organized a boring community service job for him at the church, and his reunion with the love of his life, Luca, was a disaster. Luca is fascinating, breathtaking, exciting, and ... way out of his league! But virgin Daniel has chosen her as his partner for his first sexual encounter. Although he made the decision four years ago, Luca still knows nothing about it. She just sees Daniel as a good friend. But things can't go on like this, so Daniel decides to change his life dramatically. He changes jobs, an act he considers much easier than changing the love of his life. Or maybe not. He then meets Anna, a social worker, and for the first time he realizes that there are indeed alternatives to Luca. And all of the following small and not-so-small catastrophes help him to realize that life is what happens between it all. And that is why there is nothing to regret. <<

6.THE LONGING (2002, IAIN DILTHEY)
This film won the Golden Leopard at Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=801

>> The Longing tells the story of Lena, a minister’s wife delivered from the bleak prison of her marriage through her forbidden and quietly burgeoning love for Paul.Set in a dreary village in the Swabian-Franconian forest, the seemingly reserved Lena lives with her tyrant of a husband, Johannes in a loveless marriage. Johannes is the village’s spiritual leader and Lena is his faithful, ever-willing-to-serve wife. Lena’s daily life is characterized by grinding monotony, a life narrowly circumscribed by nursing, organ playing and the duties of the marriage bed. The mysterious murder of a village girl suddenly knocks this humdrum existence off its tracks. In the wake of these events, Lena discovers the affection and tenderness for which she has always longed in Paul, the village mechanic. This encounter is the start of an emancipation that leads her not to reveal Paul’s secret regarding the girl’s murder, for fear of losing her newly won piece of happiness. In turn it means she has to remain silent, as she has always done in her many years of marriage. This love ultimately turns Lena herself into a fallen angel. <<

7.OFF BEAT (2004, HENDRIK HOELZEMANN)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=1060
>> "Crash" isn't his name, but it's what they call him. Orphaned at the age of seven after a car accident killed both of his parents, Crash grew up with a scar on his face and a scar in his soul. A fear of intimacy has turned him into a melancholy loner; a longing to help others has led him to become a medic on a rescue team. When he's not out on the streets saving lives, he dreams. Of escaping. Of finding the young woman who always appears just before he wakes. One night, he comes face to face with the woman of his dreams: November is her name, her boyfriend has just died of an overdose, and she's a good eight months pregnant. But she's ready to go on with her life. And she makes Crash realize that he, too, has a life – one of his own, not just the one he is living for others. As he and November fall in love, Crash begins to feel something like happiness and hope. And when fate seems about to repeat itself, it is up to him to choose between leaving everything behind or grabbing his new life with both hands...In his virtuoso feature-film debut, Hendrik Hoelzemann probes into the soul of a troubled young man who rescues others but is desperately in need of being rescued himself. Bringing a subdued yet powerful intensity to his role as "Crash," noted young talent Matthias Schweighoefer (Soloalbum) infuses the film with poignant intensity. <<

8.LET THE CAT OUT OF THE BAG (2004, FLORIAN SCHWARZ)
http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/saf/pro/bb2006/pages/film-katze.htm

>> Florian Schwarz’s award-winning debut film about a “love story for those who do not like love stories” focuses on two young people who accidentally meet, feel an attraction, are unable to communicate, and for one adventurous night experience a different kind of love. Karl, a drifter, ends up in a train to Leipzig where he meets Doris, a young waitress. He follows her to a karaoke bar, then to her apartment where he meets her lascivious sister. Is he a stalker or just a loner who is fleeing his past? Is she a voyeur or an exhibitionist or was she sexually abused? As the tension builds, music by 2Raumwohnung and Slut plays as the close-ups move faster and the characters are unable to escape the labyrinth of their emotions.<<

E.FROM GERMANY FILM & TELEVISION ACADEMY IN BERLIN (DFFB)

9.BUTTERFLIES (1986, WOLFGANG BECKER)
This film won the Golden Leopard at Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. Wolfgang Becker later directed GOOD BYE LENIN! (2003, A)
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0065615/
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=852

>> The film is based on the short story Butterflies by Ian McEwan. A little girl has drowned in a nearby canal. A 19-year-old man, who lives in the same inner-city neighborhood, is the sole witness. Although he has made a statement to the police of everything he saw, the father of the little girl wants to talk to him today. The young man still has a few hours before the meeting, and lots of time to kill on this dreary Saturday. The events of the past days spring forth in his memory.<<

10.THE ROAD TO GOD KNOW WHERE (1990, ULI M. SCHUEPPEL)
http://www.amazon.com/Road-Knows-Where-Live-Paradiso/dp/B000CCZR6S
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51CYTBYYPPL._SS500_.jpg

This is a documentary about the tour in America of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Someone in Amazon.com gave a comment on this film:
>> The documentary is a deliberatly paced, understated, non-explaning series of impressions. No biography here, no guiding voice-over or cinematic manipulation: just scenes which themselves often do not really have a point, but are, as a whole, a pure look at The Man as he really is, calm, dead-pan funny at times, but often serious and quiet. Not at all the rockbeast he sometimes is during his shows. To some this may simply be a dull film without real climaxes or `exceptional happenings', but to the real fans it gives a true feeling of an almost Jim Jarmusch road movie a.k.a. "slices of life".<<

The film POTSDAMER PLATZ REMIX (1997), which is also directed by Uli M. Schueppel, was once shown in Bangkok. I think this film should be shown together with UNTITLED (2005, Sathit Satarasart, A)

11.MY SISTER’S GOOD FORTUNE (1996, ANGELA SCHANELEC)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=115
>> It is evening, a park exit. Christian has picked Ariane up from work, they are waiting for the bus. Ariane talks about her work in the market-garden and her sister Isabel. Christian has fallen in love with Isabel, and Ariane keeps talking for fear of being left by him. Christian is a photographer without a regular income. Lunchtimes, he eats at the flat of his friend who is a painter, has a wife and child, and leads a way of life whose naturalness has never been questioned. Christian asks Isabel if she wants to move in with him, and he tries to stop seeing Ariane. All three think it is only a question of time before every-thing will be simple again, but none of them know how they will cope with this passing of time. "During the shoot, we were always throwing open the windows, and each place was fine that was loud, public and overwhelming. I think that these people - Ariane, Christian and Isabel - can only live in the city and would be unhappy or different in another place" (Angela Schanelec).<<

12.THE FIRST TIME (1996, CONNIE WALTHER)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=161
>> 15-year-old Fili has a crush on the American actor Johnny Depp. Even though the young Berlin girl hasn't yet met the teenie-idol personally, she is convinced that she and Johnny are destined for one another. So the enamored schoolgirl starts saving up for an air ticket to Los Angeles. Even when Fili, still a virgin, finds out that the actor prefers more mature women, she is not prepared to give up: She'll just have to become sexually experienced with some other man beforehand. But trying to find the right man for her initiation turns out to be more difficult and complicated than Fili thought, for the chap she finally decides on seems disinterested ...<<

13.UNKNOWN FRIEND (1999, ANNE HOEGH KROHN)
http://www.ce-review.org/00/17/kinoeye17_dewit1.html

14.PERFECT SIGHT (2000, SOEREN VOIGT)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=423
>> The Vietnamese handyman Pit Sun, his girl-friend Anita, an insignificant bank clerk, who has just robbed his branch and - while at it - obviously enjoyed torturing his superior, his wife Natascha, who is disgusted both by this and his way of feeding the fish, and finally the boss Ralf, all play a part in the goings on at "Perfect Sight", a camping site in the former GDR. On this extraordinary day, the anniversary of the Sparwasser goal against the FRG will be celebrated, deserving regulars will be banned from the camp, and nothing will ever be the same again. The former pop star Michi Fanselow, to whom the girls of the GDR once threw their slips on stage, is going to give a big concert, and emotions will be released in a gathering storm. This debut film by director Soeren Voigt grants us an eccentric, exhilarating and always sympathetic view of a series of supposedly grotesque figures on the edge of a reunited German society.<<

15.ENGLAND! (2000, ACHIM VON BORRIES)
http://www.pecina.cz/files/www.ce-review.org/01/22/kinoeye22_dewit.html
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=410
>>On 26 April 1986, reactor 4 of Chernobyl nuclear power station in the Ukraine exploded. 16.PAUL IS DEAD (2000, HENDRIK HANDLOEGTEN)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=376
>> It's 1980 in a small town somewhere in West Germany. Summer vacation has just started and the days seem long for Tobias (12), a raving Beatles-fan. He is dreaming about having a band of his own together with his older brother Till. But Till just started dating his first girl-friend and therefore has other things on his mind. One fine day a mysterious man appears in town driving a white VW beetle, apparently English, with steering wheel on the right hand side. Tobias is convinced that he has seen the licence plate on the car before. Going through his LPs he finds his suspicions confirmed: It is the beetle shown on the Abbey Road cover.
His detective instincts aroused, he discovers a strange story which happened in 1966: Paul McCartney died under mysterious circumstances and was replaced with a double by his manager, Brian Epstein. All the elements seem to match and Tobias starts to investigate the case, believing he is confronted with Paul McCartney's killer.<<

17.THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE (2001, NATHALIE STEINBART)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=576
>> The searing heat of summer isn't the only thing that dominates this film. It's also the melancholy of the provinces, so spare in its spoken words. Marek, a petty thief on the run, and Heinrich, a callous financial advisor, meet up one hot day. Each is unaware that fate awaits them at a forlorn filling station in the countryside of reunited East-Germany. There, in the tiny town of Friedfelde, is where Margot lives and works as a filling station attendant, despite her disability ever since a reckless car accident. Margot daydreams of a better life which could come true if she could only win the prize money for the crossword puzzles she fanatically solves every day - without ever posting them. Marek, who has stolen Heinrich's car, blows into Friedfelde, a village of 238 souls, and passes himself off as a financial whiz kid. Unwittingly, he stumbles into the pent up anger of the community who thinks that he is the man who not only stole their money but also their pride. One beer-soaked night, the furious mob, armed with lit torches, sets out on a march with fatal consequences. The very filling station to which Marek flees for safety, surprisingly provides the setting for a tender love story, leading up to an explosive showdown.<<

18.NEITHER FISH, NOR FOWL (2001, MATTHIAS KEILICH)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=716

>> Adopted as a baby in Korea and raised in a provincial German town, Michael has two identities. His friends accept him as he is, but the mirror reminds Michael everyday of the hole in his biography which nags at him like an open wound. Who am I? Where are my roots? The questions of a generation which has lost sight of its goals because it has also lost touch with its own points of reference. When his adoptive parents divorce, Michael suddenly feels lost and runs to his best friend in Berlin. His confrontation with the beautiful Jin Hi forces him to make a decision, for even in Berlin's Korean community he is "neither fish, nor fowl". As a German with no knowledge of the Korean language and tradition, he is damned to live between two cultures. Michael's journey as a stranger in his own land makes him come to the realization that "home" can have many faces. Even that of a loved one ...<<

19.PORTRAIT OF A MARRIED COUPLE (2002, ISABELLE STEVER)
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=1009
>> Dorit and Alex are having their wedding party. Their impassioned, destructive relationship progresses through various stages from evening until daybreak. The party pushes the potential for argument to its natural climax. This is a story of an impossible love in which two people torture themselves and others to prove that they are alive.Portrait of a Married Couple compresses the story of a longer relationship into one night. This compression exaggerates the characters; there are no breaks or compromises. The characters are of today, but the relationship described is timeless.<<

ZERO FOR CONDUCT (1933, JEAN VIGO, A+)

MEMORIES OF MATSUKO (A-)

1.CARMEN COMES HOME (1951, KEISUKE KINOSHITA)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043699/

>> A girl who had left her small Japanese village for the excitement and adventure of the big city--in this case, Tokyo--returns home years later for a visit. However, scandal erupts when the villagers find out what she has been doing in Tokyo all these years--she's a stripper.<<

2.WHEN A WOMAN ASCENDS THE STAIRS (1960, MIKIO NARUSE, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054144/

3.THE INSECT WOMAN (1963, SHOHEI IMAMURA, A)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057363/

และช่วงท้ายๆของ MEMORIES OF MATSUKO ก็ทำให้นึกถึง ALL ABOUT LILY CHOU-CHOU ตรงที่มันสะท้อนภาพความโหดร้ายของเด็กมัธยมในปัจจุบัน
