WHERE CAN I GO WITHOUT YOU?

MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE PUTS A LIST OF RECOMMENDED NINA SIMONE'S SONGS IN HIS BLOG:

BELOW IS MY COMMENT IN HIS BLOG:

From the album FORBIDDEN FRUIT, I also like the song WHERE CAN I GO WITHOUT YOU? very much. I like both Nina's singing and the lyrics of the song, which is about a woman who can travel all over the world, but can't erase the memories of the one she loves. The lyrics of this song reminds me of another favorite song called "Always Something There to Remind Me", which was penned by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. My favorite version of this Bacharach song is the version by Espiritu.

AND THIS IS MY FURTHER COMMENT:

The lyrics of WHERE CAN I GO WITHOUT YOU?

I went to London town to clear up my mind
Then on to Paris for the fun I could find
I found I couldn't leave my memories behind
Where can I go without you

Tried seeing Singapore that wouldn't do
So I went Vienna but I found you THERE too
Even in Switzerland your memory came through
Where can I go without you

So I wanted to travel and I wanted romance
So I just took off and chased my rainbow across the sea
But it's all over I'm tired of faces and QUAINT old places
Baby if you won't be there with me

Back on the boat again farewell to France
So long West Germany it hasn't got a chance
I'll trade the sides I've seen for one loving glance
Where can I go without you

THE LYRICS OF "ALWAYS SOMETHING THERE TO REMIND ME":

I walk along the city streets
you used to walk along with me,
and every step I take recalls
how much love, we used to be.

Oh, how can I forget you
when there is always something there to remind me
always something there to remind me.

I was born to love you, and I will never be free
you'll always be a part of me.

When shadows fall, I pass a small cafe
where we would dance at night
and I can't help recalling how it
felt to kiss and hold you tight.

Oh, how can I forget you
when there is always something there to remind me
always something there to remind me.

I was born to love you, and I will never be free
you'll always be a part of me.

If you should find you miss the sweet
and tender love we used to share
just go back to the places where we used to go,
and I'll be there.

Oh, how can I forget you
when there is always something there to remind me
always something there to remind me.

I was born to love you, and I will never be free
when there is, when there is
when there is always something there to remind me ...

--What movies would be fit for these two songs? I think it is DON'T LOOK NOW (1973, Nicolas Roeg), in which grieving parents travel to Venice but there's always something there to remind them of their dead child. Hahaha. Just kidding.

Actually these two songs reminds me of a Thai gay short movie called YOU ARE WHERE I BELONG TO (2006, Thunska Pansittivorakul, A+). In this documentary film, the filmmaker seem to be unable to forget his ex-boyfriend. Though he travels far to Japan and meets new people, including handsome Japanese porn star, he still thinks of that person.

The theme of YOU ARE WHERE I BELONG TO is nearly similar to another film by the same director -- VOUS VOUS SOUVIENS DE MOI (2005, Thunska Pansittivorakul, A+). The director of this film describes it in his website like this:

>>Adapted from a novel by Thai genderist Tomorn Sukpreecha. The first time I read, I couldn’t sleep and shed some tears. That night, I gathered up all the footage I had recorded, and thought a lot about personal stuffs. I thought of someone who was hundreds miles away from here. I tried to communicate with him in broken French , with somebody else’s memory, with the sky that held us together, with antennas, with electric wires or anything that I believed it would get me through him. And with a photo that I always wondered if I burn it,could I forget him ?.<<

--Good news!!!! I got the DVD of BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) from Mangpong shop on the seventh floor of Mahboonkrong Center. The price on the cover is 59 baht. But actually the real price is half of that, because Mangpong uses the policy "BUY 1 GET 1 FREE", so when I bought BLACK CHRISTMAS, I also chose a DVD of CAMPFIRE (2004, Joseph Cedar) for the free stuff.

Be sure when you buy BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974), you see the name of MARGOT KIDDER on the cover. So you know you get the right one.

--One of the best things about TAXIDERMIA is that it can miraculously escape the censorship board. Hahaha.

--When you watch "4", I have to warn you that the first 30-minutes of this film might be slow, but just hold on, and then the film will shift its gear to go into the realm of full-blown insanity.
