REMEMBERING MY HOME, SWEET HOME

“A HOUSE IS MADE OF BRICK AND STONE, BUT A HOME IS MADE OF LOVE ALONE”

According to the definition above, I think my homes include Mahboonkrong Center, which is the place where I hanged out with my beloved friends during 1987-1995; DJ Station, which is the place where I met my beloved friends during 1995-2000; and my apartment room, which is made of my love for my teddy bears.

My friend just asked me about the songs which were played at DJ Station during 1995-2000. I don’t fully trust my memory, but I think they include:

Wow. Thank you very much.
I m so glad reading and listening these songs.

I knew some songs and bought it as a cd single, including Tori Amos+BT's Blue Skies, Madonna's DON’T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA , Robert Miles's One & ONe and Lisa Stansfield's People Hold On.

There are another song in that period that i really love, it's I DONT WANT TO by Toni Braxton. It's produced by R Kelly but i really love the dance version.

I fall in love this song. i think R Kelly is genius and Toni Braxton's alto voice is so special and the chorus is like an angel. It's so sad that these kind of songs are made for dancing in pub but i rarely go there and usually listen in my home. (dancing alone!)

You can listen this version here ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Y7te8i4yc

i bought these cds from Music One (Silom), Tower Records (Siam Center) and a cd shop in Siam Square. At that time these shops sell cd single only 150-300 Baht. i m still remembered that i'm surprised by Madonna's BEDTIME STORIES becuase it has 9-10 remix version.

I 'm not sure if that is the time before the Tom-Yum-Goong economic crisis but there are many cd singles selling in Thailand with a not-too-expensivel price. Then, after the crisis, the cd shops are gone.

The time that i bought these cds, i never knew that there's a pub in BKK that play this kind of music. Because when i m at the age that can go to the pub, my friend always take me to a place that always plays the Aqua's BARBIE GIRL again and again!

--Yes, the dance version of I DON’T WANT TO is very good. After I had read your comment, I searched for my old tape to listen to this song again. I have only Frankie Knuckles’ version of this song, because my friend, who is a die-hard fan of Frankie Knuckles, made a mixtape which includes this song for me.

--Talking about CD singles reminds me of the record company RED BEAT in Thailand. I love this company very much, because it released many dance CD singles which include so many remix tracks in it. I just searched for the information about this company in Google and it leads me to Merveillesxx’s blog:
http://www.bloggang.com/viewdiary.php?id=merveillesxx&month=02-2008&date=18&group=2&gblog=39

--In the mid 1990’s, there was also a great CD shop in Bangkok called LASER FORUM. It was located in Silom Complex before it moved to Siam Square. It imported many CDs from abroad. Most of its regular customers are gays. I was too poor to buy many CDs from this shop because I hadn’t started working at that time. I think I bought only:

1.MOVE ON BABY – Cappella
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPeyIOAAvqE

2.ONLY LOVE CAN BREAK YOUR HEART – Saint Etienne
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9Vyhz9wOtM

3.SLOW BUILDINGS (ALBUM) – Pale Saints

4.SPLIT (album) -- Lush

--Music One (Silom) was a great shop, though many of its great dance CDs were too expensive for me to buy. They were imported, and cost about 800-1500 baht. So I just kept on buying tapes for 105 baht at that time. Hahaha.

--I asked my friends about the songs in DJ Station at that time. They include:

1.AIN’T NOBODY – Diana King
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MQL97L2z34

2.BELIEVE – Cher
(How could I forget this megahit? Hahaha. I still heard this song being played in a restaurant today.)

3.DANCE WITH ME – Debelah Morgan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Az1axrZ7tBk

4.EVERYBODY’S FREE (TO FEEL GOOD) – Rozalla

5.IT’S NOT RIGHT BUT IT’S OK – Whitney Houston

6.NOBODY’S SUPPOSED TO BE HERE – Deborah Cox
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIX9fBRw4tc

7.SEXUAL – Amber

8.WAITING FOR TONIGHT – Jennifer Lopez

9.WHEN I THINK OF YOU’95 (Morales mix) – Janet Jackson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-7xNtVDlVI

10.A WOMAN’S GOT THE POWER – Jennifer Holiday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5erD8oaYp8

Actually, i didn't buy many cd singles as much as i thought. I bought a cassette single which still availble that time.

I remembered LASER FORUM. It's one of my favourite cd shop because it's easy to go (my home is around silom area) and it's cheaper than Music One. Since you told me that there were many gay customers so now i know why this shop had many female singers album on the shelf and there were tons of Madonna's album.

I think one of the reason that Music One is gone is because all the cds are very expensive. I think i only bought 1 or 2 cd at that shop. But i loved to go thare and saw the cover of cds and sometimes i asked the seller to played the songs for me, may be i was young so thet played the songs as i wanted.

Diana King's AIN’T NOBODY is very good but i prefer SHY GUY. It's so fun to hear she sings the chorus. I think Dian King is great because she is not beautiful but she was very famous at that time. That means people really love her voice (or her accent).

I remembered that international music reviewer usually said that Deborah Cox is the new Whitmey HOuston. It's so sad that her time was too short.

Janet Jackson's WHEN I THINK OF YOU’95 (Morales mix) is one of my all time favorite. I think i heard this song because Janet released her greatest Hits : Design of a Decade. It's one of the most beautiful album title ever.

Another artist/song that i really love in that period is Annie Lannox's No More I Love You's. Annie Lennox's music vdo is always gay friendly so it was very good for a gay boy like me in that time. and i really love DIVA and MEDUSA. (it's her debut and sophomore album as a solo artist)

and i guess you will love this song for sure : Starz on 54's IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND. It was sung by Amber, Ultra Nate & Jocelyn Enriquez for the movie 54.
When i was in that period i really hoped that i could sing and dance like these 3 divas. I still haven't seen this movie but i loved Ryan Phillipe so much in that time. He was super HOT.

Black forest, talking about “home”, I actually like the lyrics in the song GIVING YOU THE BEST THAT I GOT (Anita Baker) very much. It says:-

“Somebody understands me
Somebody gave his heart to me
I stumbled my whole life long
Always on my own, now I'm home

My weary mind is rested
And I feel as if my home is in your arms
Fears are all gone, I like the sound of your song
And I think I want to sing it forever”

But I’m still not “home” yet according to the lyrics of this song. :-(

Vespertine, as for Diana King, I really love the song I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER. DJ Station also played this song a lot of times then.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VB4I7nPdyw

As for the song AIN’T NOBODY, I also like the version sung by Jaki Graham very much. I also bought its cassette single.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xua16fKJPLg

Yes, I think Deborah Cox’s time is too short. Many artists have shorter careers than I thought, such as Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. A few artists have longer careers than I thought, such as Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears.

I just listend to an old dance mixtape in the 1990’s. It has the song LOVE ON AND ON by Lorraine Cato. I worship this song, but I almost find no information about it on the internet. Lorraine Cato should have been much more famous than this. I only find one song by her in Youtube. It’s called DID IT.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUVlF7_ulng

As for Janet Jackson, one of my most favorites of her song is LET’S WAIT AWHILE, which is a slow one.

Ah! I forgot IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND. This song was a megahit in DJ Station, too.

Annie Lennox seems to be a gay icon like Barbra Streisand, though they are not gays. I was shocked by the beauty of her music video WHY, when it came out in 1992. My most favorite of her music video is BEETHOVEN (I LOVE TO LISTEN TO) when she was in Eurythmics.

Since I went to DJ station yesterday, these are the hit song. I don’t know if these were the right remixes, I just chose the version I love.

1. Altar feat. Jeanie Tracy - Everybody Up
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8EOY81_7Yg
I don’t know this song before but I think this kind of song represents the gay pub.

2. Britney Spears - Circus (Junior Vasquez Electric Circus Mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3OE7ebkNSc
Junior Vasquez is still great at his work.

3. Ne-Yo – Closer (Stonebridge HOUSE REMIX)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1yNf75K1UY
Ne-yo was hip hop artist but his latest record he was more in dance/pop. I like this remix very much. A++++++++++

4. Katy Perry – Hot N Cold (Remix by Almighty Cover Girlz)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYkw9Gut3ls
Because there were lots of people dancing in the tiny space so I held a cute stranger during this song!

5. Poker face - Lady Gaga (LGG Vs. GLG Radio Edit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6M5jmcfOSM
I love Lady Gaga and so happy that this song is a hit now (It is #3 on Billboard 100)

6. Rihanna-Take a Bow (seamus_ haji_and_paul_emanuel_radio_edit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nv_7RtLMiE
Firstly, I don’t like Rihanna because she is too plastic. But the remix and the real incident she’s facing (she was beaten by her boyfriend) change my perception.

7.Beyonce – Single Ladies (Redtop Mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOx9im1eVHU
She’s so fun. I think in the future, this song will be comparable to Aretha Franklin’s Respect.

8. Beyonce – If I Were A Boy (DJ Escape & Dom Capello Mix)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uT_27YtQqRI
Another good song from the same album.

9. Akon - Right Now (Na Na Na)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8y4Pzpxn9E
I m not a big fan of Akon but evrypeople in the pub sang this song. So it s a hit for sure.

Big thanks to you, Vespertine. I love the songs you post very much, especially EVERYBODY UP, POKER FACE, SINGLE LADIES, and TAKE A BOW. Before this, I knew only one song of Rihanna – DON’T STOP THE MUSIC, and I like it a lot. Rihanna seems to be my type of music. I have never heard of Altar and Jeanie Tracy before, but they sound great. They remind me of dance music in the 90’s.

I hope you will return to DJ Station again and again.

I never known Jeanie Tracy before. But she made me think of the sisters who sing IT"S RAINING MEN!!!! I always love the big fat black girls in the dance music. They always bring the house down. Its like this kind of vocal can upgrade the nightclub to the spiritual level of the church.

celinejulie said...

Talking about IT’S RAINING MEN, I wonder why the music videos of this song by Geri Halliwell and by Martha Wash + RuPaul are so tame compared to the original music video by The Weather Girls. I think some very old music videos, like PHYSICAL (Olivia Newton-John), SO MANY MEN (Miguel Brown), and LOVE IN THE FIRST DEGREE (Bananarama) dare to exploit male bodies much more than music videos in 1990’s. Hahaha.
